In 2020, police forces across Europe helped break the encrypted communications tool EncroChat and learn about the activities of thousands of criminals, many of whom are now in jail. Academics at the University of Portsmouth carried out interviews with police officers who have voluntarily resigned. These indicated that police officers are more likely to leave due to poor leadership, lack of promotion opportunities, organisational inflexibility and a feeling that they have no voice rather than because of pay or stress.
